Hidden Partition
I've run into a problem where I could not unhide a partition. It appeared to be a normal partition, but I just couldn't make it visibie in Windows. This type of partition is very common on computers provided by some of the major vendors. They use them as a safe place to put a recovery image or diagnostic utilities. The only way that they provide for you to access these partitions is through the boot manager that they provide on their hard disk.
To get at the contents of these protected partitions, you must change the partition type. This is done using the fdisk utility in a Linux distribution. You can use a Linux live cd such as Ubuntu or System Rescue CD. when you list the partition table, you'll notice that the hidden paritition is of type 0x12 Compaq. Change the partition type to 07 NTFS/HPFS. When you reboot the computer, the hidden partition will be accessible to you.
